This interview between Shelly Justement and Margot Naessan explores Margot’s life and her immigration to the United States from Norway in 1992. Margot was born in Telemark, Norway in 1967. In this interview, Margot discusses her family and childhood in Norway, her reason for moving to Maryland, her family and career, and her community of Norwegian friends in the United States. Margot’s interview focuses on cultural comparisons between Norway and the United States, and briefly touches on Vietnamese culture from her ex-husband’s family. Margot also discusses the impact that the COVID pandemic has had on her experience as an immigrant in the United States.

Interview of Fucheng Li
This interview with Fucheng Li goes over his life experiences as an immigrant to the United States from Guangdong, China. Fucheng immigrated to the U.S. in 2012 at the age of 12, after his father immigrated to the U.S. 25 years prior due to a work opportunity. A major part of Fucheng’s life has been schooling, so he discusses the differences in education between China and the U.S. In addition, his past life in China allows him to comment on cultural and societal norms/practices surrounding his community in China. His experiences as an immigrant may be applicable to and even assist other immigrant children adapting to life in the United States, especially those who do not have a comprehensive grasp on English.

Interview of Jeannette Gasca
This interview between Diego Plazas and Jeannette Gasca discusses Jeannette’s experience immigration from Columbia to the US in the 90s amidst a civil war. Jeannette talks about her career path and how she had to change careers due to the language barrier in the US. Jeannette also talks about life in Columbia when she was a child and what Columbia is like for her family still there now. Jeannette emphasizes the importance of education for everyone.

Interview of Gloria-Ines Acosta
This interview between Adam Flesher and Gloria-Inés Acosta dives into Mrs. Acosta’s immigration experience from Barranquilla, Colombia to Baltimore, Maryland in 1978 when she was just seven years old.

Interview of Blanca Henriquez
This interview between Blanca Henriquez and Ivonne Gonzalez explores Blanca's experiences growing up during the Salvadoran Civil War and how she came to the United States. Blanca and her family were able to immigrate due to her father's work visa.

Interview of Bebe Lila Spooner Melville
This interview between Bebe Lila Spooner Melville and Hannah Fields explores Melville's experiences as an immigrant to the United States from Guyana. As a teacher and government employee, Lila witnessed the racial and political conflict that enveloped her country and eventually forced her to leave as part of a mass exodus in the early 1980s.

Interview of Norma
This interview between Kendall Ohm and Norma (pseudonym) explores Norma’s experience as an immigrant to the United States from Mexico City. When Norma was just one year old, her family relocated to California to join her father who had been working in the country. When she was eight, they returned to Mexico City, citing a desire to be closer to the rest of their extended family. After middle school, they again relocated to the United States-this time to Rockville, Maryland-because her father could no longer find sustainable work in Mexico. This interview investigates the challenges that Norma faced throughout her childhood, and exemplifies the unique experience she brings to the discussion on the immigrant experience.

Interview of Mariam Hurreh
This interview of Mariam Hurreh, Somali immigrant to the United States who currently lives in Maryland and is a mother of five, focuses on various aspects of Mariam’s life and her experiences as in immigrant to the DC area. Initially it will focus on her childhood in Somalia, then it will shift towards her teenage years in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and finally her life in the United States. She discusses the various jobs she held as an immigrant throughout her journey and various other challenges she faced both in Jeddah and the United States and ultimately reflects on her experiences as an immigrant.
