Interview of Betty Simarmata
This interview between Duany Philip and Betty Simarmata goes into the
experiences of Betty, an Indonesian immigrant that has lived in the United States ever since 2004. Although Betty had to overcome challenges when coming to the United States, her experiences in Indonesia gave her the strength to move despite the major differences in culture, people, and lifestyle. Her upbringing in plantation farms, living in the city of Medan, Bandung, and even Jakarta have shaped her identity as a proud Indonesian to this day. Her story emphasizes how culture is important to an immigrant’s life because it gives a sense of identity of who you are and where you come from.
This interview was conducted as part of an undergraduate final project for the University of Maryland, College Park course HIST 428M (Spring 2021). This course was led by Professor Anne Rush of the Department of History, College of Arts and Humanities, and was sponsored by the Center for Global Migration Studies. -
Interview of Long Van Le and Tuyet Phoung Thi Ha
Presented here are the transcripts of two interviews. The first is between David Le and his father Long Van Le and the second is between David Le and his mother, Tuyet Phuong Thi Ha. David interviews each of his parents about their experiences in Vietnam and the United States, exploring childhood, family, feelings, adjustment, and how they got to America. They demonstrate how two people from the same place can experience their journeys as immigrants quite differently.

Interview of Nallathambi Domnic
This interview between Retu Domnic and NallathambiDomnic goes in depth on what the immigration process was like for Nallathambi Domnic and his family. Nallathambi Domnic is a 52-year-old Indian American who was born in India on September 23, 1967. He then moved to Bahrain in 1991 in order to provide for his family back in India. He met his wife in 1992 back in Bahrain as they were working for the same company. They then had their child in 1999 and migrated to the United States of America in 2003. Nallathambi’s dream was provide the best education for his child and he believed the American school system was the best. He also wanted better job opportunities for his line of work which would be possible in America.

Interview of Tegest Kebede
This is an interview with Tegest Kebede conducted by Abel Dereje. In this interview, Tegest describes living in Ethiopia as a child and her personal experiences with the Derg, the military junta that ruled the country from 1974 to 1991. Tegest also speaks about her education in Ethiopia, the ways that her family helped her move to the United States, and how she learned English.

Interview of Gala Meyerovich
This interview between Gabby Cohen and Gala Meyerovich examines Gala’s journey to the United States. It focuses on her experiences before her immigration from Russia, and the differences she encountered once she arrived in Rockville, Maryland. Gala speaks about how her family, especially her mother, felt about her departure.After falling in love with an old Russian classmate, Gala decided to start a new life in the U.S. with her new husband and her son. She recounts the difficulty of trying to find work without being able to speak English and how it was hard to make friends due to her Russian upbringing. Gala’s interview touches further on topics such as her work-life both in her homeland and in America and her views on distinctions between the two countries’ education system and the role of teachers in terms of interactions with students and parents.
